“But music, don't you know, is a dream from which the veils have been lifted. It's not even the expression of a feeling, it's the feeling itself” - Debussy
The variation in the tempo or beats of music plays an important element when the musician wants to arouse the listeners’ emotional response. And for the second Music in the Sky mini-series, we want to elevate your experience by bringing together a series of complex rhythms and luscious harmonies, away from Music in the Sky’s neoclassical approach. In many popular styles, this program will be simple and sincere, at the same time that it retains subtlety and complexity.
Performing in a historic, sandstone tunnel at the Coal Loader in Waverton is renowned international artist Anna Murakawa. She is a professional violinist, recording artist, and Doctor of Musical Arts from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music that has lived and performed in 4 different continents with major orchestras, ensembles, and artists from both the classical and pop world, such as Eminem, Michael Bublé, One Republic, Delta Goodrem, Calum Scott, amongst others. Joining her on stage is special guest Vladimir Gorbach, himself an internationally acclaimed guitarist who has captivated audiences across Europe, China, Japan, North and South America and his native country of Russia. His win at the 2011 Guitar Foundation of America Concert Artist Competition earned him an over 50- cities concert tour throughout North America, including a debut at Carnegie Hall.
The evening will start with music from the impressionists’ Ravel and Debussy, the two most important and influential French composers of the early 20th century. Their pieces provide a perfect segment to the music by the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos, who brings native sounds, diversity, and modernism in his compositions. After the beautiful and ethereal sound of Bachianas N. 5, the evening will start delving into a faster pace with music from the also Brazilian composer Radames Gnatalli, before erupting into lively and poignant Spanish influenced pieces. Anna and Vladimir will both finish the evening with Astor Piazzolla’s most famous tango piece, Libertango.
This performance takes place in Tunnel One of the Coal loader Centre for Sustainability. Located on the western side of the Waverton peninsula, it is just a five minutes' walk from the Waverton Station. Tunnel One is one of the four 180 m- long, coal-loading tunnels, running parallel to each other under the Coal loader main platform. The music will be fully acoustic and beautifully amplified by the crushed sandstone and heritage-condition concrete surface. Tunnel One is only opened to the public on special events, such as this Music in the Sky mini-performance.
